Support for Indigenous research and research training

Research excellence includes the strengthening of Indigenous self-determination, leadership and capacity in research and research training, and respecting the value of Indigenous Knowledge systems.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is (SSHRC) has long been committed to supporting research by and with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. SSHRC supports Indigenous research and research training across all its funding opportunities.

Indigenous Research Statement of Principles

With the guidance of the Indigenous Advisory Circle, SSHRC has created an Indigenous Research Statement of Principles, which emphasizes the importance of Indigenous perspectives and knowledge.

Strategic plan to support Indigenous research

In 2018, SSHRC led, on behalf of the Canada Research Coordinating Committee, co-development of a strategic plan to identify new ways of doing research by and with Indigenous communities.

Progress report

The Canada Research Coordinating Committee’s progress report on the Strengthening Indigenous Research Capacity initiative addresses creating a culturally safe environment for Indigenous research, building stronger relationships with Indigenous communities, and collaborating for a more accessible and harmonized research system.

Tri-council policy statement on research involving Indigenous Peoples

Chapter 9 of the policy statement discusses key concepts and definitions related to Indigenous research as well as interpreting the ethics framework of the policy and applying its provisions in Indigenous contexts.
