Goal
The goal of SSHRC’s Research Training and Talent Development program is to support students and postdoctoral researchers to develop the next generation of researchers and leaders across society, within academia and across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.
Context
SSHRC’s Research Training and Talent Development program promotes the learning of research skills, and assists in the training of highly qualified personnel in the social sciences and humanities. Through this program, SSHRC fosters the development of talented and creative people who will become leaders across campuses and communities, and, thereby as a result, contribute to Canada’s success in the globalized 21st century.
Objectives
The objectives of the Research Training and Talent Development program are to:
- support the development of the best or most promising highly qualified personnel with social sciences and humanities research and professional skills;
- support the best or most promising social sciences and humanities students and postdoctoral researchers selected through an adjudication process;
- support domestic and international students and scholars in gaining exposure to social sciences and humanities scholarship in Canada and abroad; and
- mobilize social sciences and humanities knowledge that has the potential to lead to intellectual, cultural, social and economic influence, benefit and impact.

Following the funding for Black scholars announced in Budget 2022, SSHRC offers awards designated for Black students and postdoctoral researchers through the following research training funding opportunities: Undergraduate Student Research Awards, Canada Graduate Research Scholarship—Master’s program, Canada Graduate Research Scholarship—Doctoral program, and Canada Postdoctoral Research Award.

Impact Awards
SSHRC Impact Awards celebrate the achievements of Canada's top leaders, thinkers and researchers in the social sciences and humanities, through five award categories. Eligible institutions can nominate researchers or students who hold or have held SSHRC funding relevant to the award category.
