New Knowledge Synthesis Grant recipients from Canada and UK to further understanding of governance systems
July 23, 2025 – Ottawa
The Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), as well as UK Research and Innovation’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), have awarded over $1.4 million for 50 Knowledge Synthesis Grants to explore the topic of “Envisioning Governance Systems that Work”—one of the 16 global challenges identified through SSHRC’s Imagining Canada’s Future initiative.
This international funding opportunity was delivered in two streams:
- 28 applications were funded under the first stream; 25 by SSHRC and three by CIHR.
- 22 applications were funded under the second stream, reserved for international collaborations between two applicants. These grants are co-funded by SSHRC, AHRC and ESRC.
Themes and issues to be explored through these new grants include governance of climate change adaptation in Canada, ensuring ethical and accountable governance of artificial intelligence, global frameworks to address health emergencies, and more.
By utilizing and combining pre-existing research, the projects will deepen our understanding of these issues, as well as identify potential knowledge gaps for future research.
