Knowledge Synthesis Grants recipients announced to advance research on The Arts Transformed

Date published: June 2, 2026

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) has awarded nearly $1.2 million to support research on The Arts Transformed—one of the 16 Future Challenge Areas identified through SSHRC’s Imagining Canada’s Future initiative.

A total of 41 Knowledge Synthesis Grants (KSGs) were awarded through this competition, which saw the largest number of applications submitted in a single KSG cohort. KSGs support the synthesis of existing research knowledge and help identify knowledge gaps. Funded researchers produce knowledge synthesis reports and briefs that support the use of evidence in decision-making and the application of best practices, and assist in developing future research agendas.

The funded projects will examine the role of the arts in addressing complex societal challenges, including research on arts-based innovations for culturally diverse older adults, Indigenous food systems as transformative art, disability inclusion in music education and more.

The recipients’ work will also help identify roles the academic, public, private and not-for-profit sectors, including Indigenous rights holders, can hold when developing and implementing robust policies, best practices and tools to strengthen the creative sector.
