New Frontiers in Research Fund awards $7 million to address COVID-19 challenges

Rapid-response grant projects will answer questions and develop tools for managing global pandemic

The New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) is supporting leading-edge, rapid-response research in the evolving battle against COVID-19 by awarding $7 million in funding to 15 Canadian-led projects. The NFRF grants are helping research teams explore medical, social and policy measures, through their different disciplines, to contribute to the global effort to mitigate the pandemic. The 15 projects were identified through the Government of Canada rapid research response, led by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), in partnership with several organizations.

With these funded projects, researchers are examining and developing solutions to address issues related to COVID-19 across a range of approaches, including through diagnostics, disease forecasting, public health, public policy, education, community engagement and global coordination.

NFRF is a federal research funding program that supports international, interdisciplinary, high-risk, fast-breaking research. The fund is an initiative of the Canada Research Coordinating Committee, and is managed as a tri-agency program on behalf of CIHR, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
