A joint initiative between SSHRC and Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and the European Union

SSHRC, in conjunction with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is launching a funding opportunity to support Canadian engagement with European research partners.

This builds on a session on existing and potential research collaboration between Canadian and European experts that was cohosted by SSHRC and the European Union (EU) at the 2018 National Metropolis Conference.

Horizon 2020 (H2020) is the EU’s largest research funding platform to date. In October 2017, the EU released the platform’s final work program for 2018-20 that comprises calls for research worth €30 billion.

The platform includes an ambitious plan for international research collaboration on migration issues, with up to €71 million in budget years 2018 and 2019 for topics ranging from the international protection of refugees to the integration of migrant children.

SSHRC encourages interested Canadian researchers to work directly with research teams from EU member states on the theme of Migration within Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge 6: Europe in a changing world— Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies. SSHRC and IRCC will make one- to three-year awards valued at $75,000 to $200,000 available to researchers affiliated with an eligible Canadian institution on successful H2020 research teams.

Researchers based in Quebec may receive additional support of $50,000 from the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et culture (FQRSC) program: Soutien à des initiatives internationales de recherche et d'innovation (SIIRI) - PSR (volet 4).

The EU is responsible for the merit review of the full consortium proposals and funding recommendations. To fund activities by Canadians within the consortiums, SSHRC will require submission of a reduced set of application materials from Canadian participants demonstrating institutional, participant and subject matter eligibility for SSHRC funding, brief project descriptions and a budget for Canadian activities.

Detailed instructions about the SSHRC application for Canadian researchers will be available in early summer 2018.
