Budget 2024 provided $1.8 billion over five years, and $748.3 million ongoing to support core research grants for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), representing a 30% top up to existing agency programs.
To support research and research training in the social sciences and humanities, $315,493,311 of the $1.8 billion will be allocated to SSHRC’s Insight Research program and Research Partnerships program over five years, with $136,273,247 ongoing. These new investments will enable SSHRC to gradually increase grant values for the following funding opportunities:
- Insight Grants
- Insight Development Grants
- Connection Grants
- Partnership Grants
- Partnership Development Grants
- Partnership Engage Grants
- Knowledge Synthesis Grants
The new investments will enable an increased number of funded research projects, and through these, support more scholars, students and postdoctoral researchers. This will enable them to build knowledge and understanding about people, cultures and societies, as well as drive the innovation Canada needs to prosper in a changing world.
Further details will be communicated directly to relevant grantees and research grant administrators when they are available.
