2024 SSHRC Impact Award Winners announced!

SSHRC is pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 SSHRC Impact Awards. The five researchers are being honoured for their transformative contributions to Canadian social sciences and humanities, and the lasting ways these are shaping Canadian society. Their specializations range from Greek antiquity’s lessons for modern democracy, to authoritarianism’s impact in China, to preserving Indigenous music and languages, among others.

New Destination Horizon Grants funding opportunity launched

SSHRC Destination Horizon Grants will support researchers affiliated with eligible Canadian postsecondary institutions in building and strengthening existing international networks and partnerships, with the ultimate goal of applying to Horizon Europe—Pillar 2 calls for proposals. Canada's association under Horizon Europe allows researchers and innovators in Canada to receive direct funding, access opportunities to make impactful discoveries, and collaborate with global partners.

Agencies sign five-year agreement for Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee 

The federal research funding agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and SSHRC—have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding concerning the Tri-agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee (TAIPR). The agreement allows researchers to continue to direct their interdisciplinary, investigator-initiated research projects to a committee with expertise drawn from across the three agencies via SSHRC’s Insight Grant and Insight Development Grant, NSERC’s Discovery Horizons, and CIHR’s fall and spring Project Grant competitions. The agreement is an important step in the tri-agency commitment to support interdisciplinary research in Canada.

New Canada Research Chairs, equity award recipients and support for indirect research costs

Congratulations to the new and renewed Canada Research Chairs; recipients of the 2023 Robbins-Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity; and 2024-25 institutional recipients of Research Support Fund funding, including for Incremental Project Grants and Research Security. The recipients were named in the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat fall bundle of announcements at Carleton University on November 14, 2024.

Tri-agency scholarship and fellowship increases come into effect

Following increased investment in research and innovation in Budget 2024, award top-ups have been sent to eligible students, postdoctoral researchers and institutions. In addition to the increased award values, approximately 1,720 additional graduate students and fellows will have access to new funding when the new harmonized programs are launched.

International Policy Ideas Challenge 2024 winners

In partnership with Global Affairs Canada, SSHRC is delighted to announce the International Policy Ideas Challenge (IPIC) winners for 2024. IPIC winners receive a modest financial award for their proposals, plus coaching to further develop their proposal, aid their research, do policy analysis and hone their presentation skills.

SSHRC transitions to new tri-agency CV format 

As part of the tri-agency’s move toward a narrative-style CV format, featured in November’s edition of Dialogue, SSHRC is set to implement its transition to the new tri-agency CV starting in December 2024 with the launch of the 2025 Impact Awards competition. The new CV allows applicants to describe their research contributions in more specific terms that more accurately reflect their career trajectory and research outputs, highlighting societal research outcomes alongside more traditional research outputs like publications.

Council of Canadian Academies releases report on equity, diversity and inclusion in the postsecondary research system

The Council of Canadian Academies has published its report outlining equity, diversity and inclusion practices for impactful changes in the postsecondary research system. The report outlines approaches for minimizing research career barriers and harnessing the ever-increasing diversity of Canada’s research community, as well as the range of perspectives, knowledges and experiences this diversity brings to the Canadian research ecosystem.

Remembering Ian Manners
